Sustainable materials: Wheat straw

Lately there's been a lot of talk about eco-friendly products, sustainable materials and other terms that refer to environmentally friendly raw materials, but what are they really?
In this series of posts about sustainable materials, we explain what each of the materials is.
Wheat Straw
Let's start with wheat straw. When we hear the word straw, we think of the agricultural waste left over after harvesting the grain. We also know that once dry, it's used as animal feed, bedding, and livestock food.
Well, recently, wheat straw, also called wheat stalk it's a bioplastic which is processed to obtain a rigid, resistant and, most importantly, biodegradable material.
In June 2014, the BUGWORKERS project concluded. This European project successfully created a series of bioplastic parts from wheat straw for use in electronic devices such as video intercoms and white goods.
Wheat straw, besides being a low-cost material due to its waste origin, is readily available throughout Central Europe and constitutes 100% of the raw material used in the production of biodegradable plastic. Thanks to this material, plastic production is reduced, contributing to a healthier planet while maintaining a competitive price.
Wheat straw has recently been used as a filler in thermoplastic compounds such as polypropylene and ABS. It is a valuable, environmentally friendly resource that improves the appearance of many reusable products, helps reduce plastic use, and reuses natural resources.
In the promotional gift sector, wheat straw is becoming fashionable and is used in products of different ranges such as:
- Technological products: for example, the Pyon Speaker , made with wheat straw and ABS.
- Products for meals and snacks (lunchboxes, cutlery, water containers...)
- Pens ( see examples )
- USB ( see examples )
