Organic cotton

The term "organic cotton" is becoming increasingly common on labels. It started with baby clothes, but it's now being used more and more for all kinds of cotton items. "Organic" generally means that this cotton is healthier for the skin, but how does it differ from conventional cotton?
Differences between organic and traditional cotton
Organic cotton is the same as traditional cotton, except for the way it is grown.
In other words, conventional cotton farming, despite occupying only 3% of cultivated land, uses approximately 25% of the world's insecticides and over 10% of its pesticides. Today, we are all well-informed about how harmful the excessive use of insecticides and chemicals is to the planet. Prolonged exposure can lead to pesticide poisoning with health consequences such as cancer, damage to various organs like the lungs and liver, and reproductive problems.
In contrast, organic cotton is grown naturally without the use of any pesticides, herbicides, fertilizers, or other chemicals. Organic farming relies on crop rotation instead of artificial fertilizers. Both the land and the people who work it benefit because they are not exposed to chemicals harmful to their health and the ecosystem that lives on the land (microorganisms, water, animals, etc.).
The method consists of alternating the types of plants grown in the same soil, according to the season and the characteristics of those plants. This prevents the development of pests and diseases specific to one type of crop and avoids soil depletion.
How is it certified that cotton is organic?
For cotton to be certified organic, it's not enough for it to be organically grown. The process of transforming the cotton into yarn must also be free of chemical dyes and bleaches. Manufacturers undergo rigorous third-party supply chain verification and can only sell certified organic cotton.
